How the Gaspé Cancer Foundation Began

The GASPÉ CANCER FOUNDATION was a result of Noreen Hackett's dream after she attended a women's symposium where she learned of the Linda LeMore-Brown Foundation. This organization was formed to help meet the financial needs of cancer patients in the Bonaventure district and Noreen saw a similar need in the Gaspé area.

As a result, the GASPÉ CANCER FOUNDATION was formed in July 2003 and received its charter as a charitable organization at that time. Our mandate is to be a 100% non-profit organization run solely by volunteers who serve the residents from Grand Valley to Corner-of-the-Beach, including Murdochville. The Foundation acts as a bilingual information center and provides financial aid to individuals afflicted with cancer who have to travel to Chandler, Ste Anne des Monts, Rimouski, Riviére-du-Loup, Quebec City, Montreal and Sherbrooke for their treatments.

We are not to be confused with l'Association du cancer de l'Est du Québec and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Income

Our means of income are from efforts of a community pulling together to help meet the great needs in Gaspé. Money is raised by the sale of annual Membership Cards at $15 per person or $25 per couple, in Memoriam Cards, Donations, Bake Sales, Amateur Shows, Bingos and Christmas Teas.

From the beginning until September 2013, the organization has returned $475,000 to the community in travel expenses.

How it works

Our office is located in Hotel Dieu Hospital in Gaspé, and is open each Friday from 1 to 3 PM. In order to be eligible for travel assistance, one must have a referral form available at our office or on our website signed by the attending doctor at the treatment center. You also have to be a member in good standing of the Gaspé Cancer Foundation for at least 30 days.

An Annual general meeting is held each yearand we currently we have about 1500 members.

We need your support

With such a great need in the mandated area, the foundation can expect the need for financial aid to grow. Few families have not been touched by cancer, a word we all dread to hear. We hope to increase the awareness of the Foundation in our area and inform the public that we are there for them. At the same time, we need your continued support and are hoping to increase the memberships in the areas such as l'Anse-à-Valleau, Petit-Cap and Cap-des-Rosiers.

Our Vision

The Gaspé Cancer Foundation would like to have an active support team in place that would be able to offer encouragement and emotional support to individuals battling cancer, as well as provide them with needed information.
